Museum History

Excavations at ancient Abdera began in 1950. The findings were originally housed in the Museum of Kavala. Since 1973 (when the Prefecture of Xanthi fell under the jurisdiction of the 19th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Komotini), they were kept in the Museum of Komotini.
In 1976, the Ministry of Culture started actions for the construction of a museum in Abdera. The decision to establish it was signed in 1984. In 1985, the Community of Abdera granted a plot of land to the village for this purpose. Construction works began in 1989 and were completed in 1992. The building was officially received in 1993. In 1994, the preparations for the exhibition began.
From 1995 to 1998, the antiquities to be exhibited were selected and transferred from the Museums of Kavala and Komotini. In 1997, the Central Archaeological Council approved the Ephorate’s proposal for the exhibition plan. The re-exhibition works were completed in 1998-1999. The Museum opened on 20 January 2000.
