Mould of a figurine of Hercules
The mould was found in the ancient city of Abdera. A figurine of Hercules was meant to be made from it. The hero is depicted as drunk and at an advanced age. He is upright and naked, with a thick, curly beard. With his left hand, which is covered by the lion’s skin, he holds his club upside down, resting on the ground. He was probably holding a cup (a kantharos or a skyphos) with his right hand.
On the back side of the mould, there is an engraved monogram consisting of the letters K and B, which is the coroplast’s signature. The mould dates to the Roman times.
There was a coroplastic workshop in Abdera, where small clay figurines were manufactured as early as the Hellenistic period.
